The Challenge

BEL V, a subsidiary of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC), required a robust fluvial flood hazard analysis for the Tihange Nuclear Power Plant, located next to the Meuse River. The challenge was to assess current and future flood risks under climate change scenarios to ensure compliance with nuclear safety standards and protect critical infrastructure.

The Solution

IMDC designed and implemented a comprehensive methodology for flood hazard analysis, including extreme value statistical analyses, boundary condition definition, and advanced hydrological and hydrodynamic modeling. Climate change impact assessments were integrated into the process, and detailed flood maps were produced for the plant site and surrounding areas under present and projected conditions.

The Impact

The study delivered a science-based, regulatory-compliant approach that strengthened the plant’s resilience against flooding. By providing actionable flood mapping and integrating climate projections, the project informed design upgrades—such as protective structures—and enhanced risk management strategies, ensuring long-term safety and operational continuity.
