Challenge

Egypt is accelerating the transformation of its electricity sector as part of its Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035, with the ambition to significantly increase the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix. Project Obelisk combines large-scale solar PV generation with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to help address one of the key challenges associated with renewable energy: intermittency. Integrating generation and storage within a single project requires carefully coordinated engineering to ensure reliable, dispatchable renewable electricity while supporting grid stability, frequency regulation and voltage control.

Solution

Tractebel provides comprehensive engineering services for both the solar PV and BESS facilities, supporting the project from tender preparation through construction documentation. Its scope includes the preparation of technical specifications, basic engineering for tendering, and detailed design and engineering deliverables for the tendering of the various solar and battery storage packages. Tractebel also prepares construction drawings for the solar and BESS installations, followed by as-built documentation, ensuring engineering continuity throughout the project’s development and implementation.

Impact

Project Obelisk will combine 1 GW of renewable generation with 200 MWh of battery storage capacity, enabling clean electricity to be stored and supplied to the grid when it is most needed. As one of Egypt’s first large-scale solar projects incorporating battery storage, it will help meet peak electricity demand with renewable energy while supporting a more resilient and diversified power system. By strengthening the integration of renewable energy into the Egyptian grid, the project will also contribute to the decarbonisation of the power sector and reinforce Egypt’s role within an increasingly interconnected regional energy system.

This will be the first large-scale hybrid solar and battery energy storage project in Egypt designed to deliver round-the-clock power supply. The project forms part of a broader development pipeline targeting approximately 1.95 GW of solar capacity and 3.9 GWh of battery energy storage (BESS).
