The Challenge

Following the closure of Berlin Tegel Airport, the site is being repurposed into a 495-hectare research and industrial park for urban technologies. The challenge lies in transforming the former airport into a sustainable, multifunctional urban district while meeting ecological, technical, and social goals.

The Solution

Tractebel supports the project with a comprehensive energy concept, integrating combined heat and power, renewable energy, and wastewater systems. Transport infrastructure is enhanced with pedestrian and cycling paths, car sharing, and innovative public transport. Our services include network mapping, coordinated space planning, permitting support, tender preparation, and supervision of construction phases, ensuring smooth execution and regulatory compliance.

The Impact

The site is evolving into a flagship for sustainable urban innovation, addressing global challenges like climate change and urbanisation. It also enables the structured development of the Kurt Schumacher Quarter, which will offer around 5,000 housing units for over 10,000 residents—bringing work and living back together in a future-ready urban environment.
