Balkan cooperation in pipeline

05 Jun 2019

A few days ago, a ground breaking ceremony officially launched construction activities for a gas interconnector between Greece and Bulgaria. We are pleased to be appointed owner’s engineer.

On May 22, a ground breaking ceremony took place in Bulgaria in the presence of officials from Bulgaria, Greece and Azerbaijan. For the project company ICGB, it signalled the official start of construction activities for the 182 km Greece-Bulgaria gas interconnector.

The route of the project will connect the Greek gas network near the town of Komotini with the Bulgarian gas network near the town of Stara Zagora, but its importance lies beyond the national borders of these two countries as it also provides future opportunities for connectivity with other important projects in the wider Balkans region.

After one year of intense commercial work, the TIBEY consortium, led by Tractebel, was chosen as owner’s engineer for this major gas interconnector which is expected to enter into operation in 2020.
